Wedding Knife and Server - Cake Cutting Etiquette
When I was getting married, I told my spouse to be the I wasn't interested in all the fanfare surrounding the reception. I did live 500 miles away, and it seemed like more of a trial than a good thing to have one. I didn't care if I had a cake, a bouquet, a line...you name it. Well, lucky for us, he did. So as the incredibly thoughtful person that he is, he and his mother planned the whole thing. And he has great taste. We chose the colors together. And then he handled all the details except refreshments. He booked the hall, had the flowers arranged (including my bouquet), enrolled a beloved aunt in decorating a cake (it was so beautiful), and got the program together. I know, I know, the bride's family is supposed to handle all those nitty-gritty details, but he was unbelievably competent.
You might be asking why I am telling this story, when you are trying to decide on a wedding knife and server. The reason is this--when I was getting married and at my own reception, there were still those unsettled questions in my mind about proper etiquette in handling something like cutting the cake. For instance, which layer do we cut? Is there a proper way to place our hands and if so, whose should be on top? Do we link arms? Do we share the cake with the guests after we have cut it?
Here are some answers to those questions. It might just put your own mind at ease when diving into this whole new world steeped in traditions.
If you are a traditionalist, which has incredible value in and of itself, then you can stick with some of these things. Cut the middle layer, his hand goes on top, link arms if you choose, and share the cake only if you want. Generally, a groom's cake is one that is made to share. Save the top tier for your first anniversary. There you go...easy as pie, or cake in this instance.
If you want to try something new, then one thing you can do is to cut the cake to share. The bride and groom stand at the cake, cutting it and serving it to their guests as a sort of thank you from them. It is an act of service to those who are sharing their joy. Consider the why of cutting the cake, and add some personal meaning to it that can be shared with your children. Make it special.
Whatever you choose, including what kind of knife and server to buy, do those things that will add to the atmosphere of such a beautiful occasion.
